Are Women At War?
July 5th 2009 01:11
Forget the battle of the sexes, women are proving to be our own worst enemy!
Lately I've been reading some fairly heated opinions on the topic of working mums vs. stay at home mums. Now as a mum who works from home with her kids…I feel I’m in a bit of a grey area. So as Switzerland it’s my duty to say...what on earth is going on!?! It's positively alarming to me that mums feel it necessary to attack the choices that other mums make. Each has their own set of pros and cons and I find it so astonishing that we can wage such bitter war against one another, when to all intents and purposes; we are in the same boat.
I voiced my thoughts to my husband and he simply replied with "Why does this surprise you...women are always hard on each other."
That got me thinking and though it pains to say...he is right. This female war of words is just the latest in a series we can encounter over our lifetime. It can start out as early as the school yard and intensify right into adulthood, damaging our precious psyche and fragile self-confidence along the way. As silly as these battles seem, they can be just as contradicting. Take a look at the load of mixed messages at your local newsagent, there are magazines touting the latest size 0 Hollywood 'it' girl…while others encourage ‘loving your curves’. Some endorse the career woman…with others hype the happy housewife. How about the fashionista opposed to the economical shopper. The list goes on and where does it leave us? Clearly at odds with one another and it has got to stop.
So next time you hear about how another mum/woman is taking on life. Cheer her on! Don’t judge her or resent her. Let’s chose not to perpetuate this behavior. Try and remember how wonderful it feels to be supported and embraced by your peers…your sisterhood.
The bonds that tie us are deep and innate; competitiveness and anger cloud our beliefs and its something each and every woman needs to address if we want to allow our cherished, pure and vulnerable daughters to grow up strong, confident and loved for who and what they are…whatever that may be.
