Granny Net - A Union for Grandparents
September 2nd 2008 12:57
To all you working parents out there who are using grandparents as free childcare providers lookout, grandparents now have their own union and charter of rights.
Grannynet (grannynet.co.uk), is a website set up to advise grandparents how much childcare it is fair to ask them to do, whether parents should offer to pay grandparents, or who decides how the child should be disciplined when in the care of the grandparents.
It would seem that Grandparents, who look after their grandchildren on a regular basis while the parent works, feel that it is too much and deserve at least some recompense. As one grandparent states, if I had the title ‘carer’ instead of ‘grandparent’ then they would earn a lot more.
Fair enough, grandparents that are acting as full time carers without being paid should stand up for themselves. The site advises that a code of conduct should be agreed on by both parties.
I say a code of conduct is a good idea, that way grandparents would not be taken advantage of for free childcare. It would also work in favour of the parents who can clearly lay down the law in terms of how they want their child looked after.
