Just a girl…not yet a woman!

October 6th 2009 05:33
I had a jaw dropping experience today when I read a story in the paper about the startling milestones young girls are aspiring to these days. As the mother of a one year old girl, I was truly astounded at the year long findings of Australian researcher Maggie Hamilton. Ms Hamilton, who interviewed thousands of parents, children and teachers, has made some shocking discoveries about how we, as a society, are overtly sexualising our young girls. The emergence of such things as make-up/spa parties, toddler bra and knicker sets and..wait for it…Brazilian waxes…are being blamed for creating a generation of confused, pressured and promiscuous young girls.

What a travesty. It makes me so sad that our girls are not going to experience the best aspect childhood…having not a clue or care for how they look or what/who they are wearing. I feel sad that these girls won’t be able to enjoy with some nostalgia the ‘awkward’ stage of changing from a girl to a woman. In all the madness it seems that we have managed to erase that very discernable line.

In all honesty, as much as I am appalled at these findings, I am happy that at least I know what a sorry state things are in. It makes me even more determined to protect my daughter’s innocence and ensure that she can grow and develop with confidence and joy, instead of only learning of her sexual appeal, where she simply ends up equating her entire self-worth by the amount of partners she’s had at the age of 14! Ugh I can barely think about that…let alone type it!

Comforted by the fact that there are some magnificent women out there advocating for the exact things I want for my daughter. Is that enough? Are their tireless efforts able to withstand the tidal wave of advertising and marketing pressure? I think not. We, as mothers and women, need to recognise where the problems are and put a stop to them.
Having worked in advertising I know how the industry sees our society. Women are key decision makers, we buy with emotion and we have the means to purchase more than ever before. An even more powerful beacon is the young woman, overrun with emotion coupled with a yet to mature sense of self…it’s almost too easy.

I, for one am going to buy Maggie Hamilton’s book ‘What's Happening to our Girls’, arm myself with information and support change. I look forward to hearing if anyone else will do the same.

As a mother of two boys your words ring true with me because it is our boys-not-yet-men that need to treat girls-not-yet-women with respect as well as an awareness of how their actions have consequences.
