Me Time
June 29th 2009 06:19
I joined the gym today. I know, I know...famous last words hey! Well I decided that it was time, and, more to the point that I was ready. My baby girl is 10 months old now and that 'Oh I just had a baby' excuse was quickly reaching its used-by-date. So, after a hearty workout I feel great, and not that fleeting 'I just joined the gym' great but genuinely motivated. You see its not only the fitness benefits I'll expect to reap by going to the gym, no no, it's something so much more important...it's me time.
I cannot say this enough to anyone who'll listen, but taking a little me time can make you a better mum. In fact, I have found that it improves every area of my life...I appreciate my husband more and I feel invigorated in my business.
Now, I might be tempting some backlash here but I'm not scared to say that I liked who I was before I had children. Of course I can't imagine not having them and I truly adore what they have brought to my life. However, I feel like some women can lose their identity once they've had children. Who does that benefit? Certainly not the mother...at least not in the long run. I think there has to be balance. Like any other mum, I want my children to be happy, nurtured, well adjusted and confident, and I just feel that I can achieve this without losing myself in the process.
So before I get into ranting territory, here's my beginners guide to me time.
Suggestions...you can do just about anything that involves you enjoying uninterrupted, quality time with you. Take a bubble bath, read a trashy mag, get a pedi, shop in stores not designed to fit prams, go to the gym, take a walk...its positively endless. You will soon pick out your favourites and it doesn't even have to cost you a cent.
Scheduling...I've been described before as being like a duck...you know that duck that is peacefully perched on the water without a care in the world...except if you take a look under the water that little ducks' legs are going a mile a minute just to stay afloat. It’s funny 'cause it’s true. So believe me when I tell you that I know how tricky, but not entirely unachievable, it can be to fit everything in. Let's face it, life is hectic these days. For everything we have made have more efficient, we have added something else to complicate matters. I find that even though I work around the schedules of my husband, children and business commitments, there is still time for me...the key is deciding how to use that time. How you make that decision is probably summed up best in my next point.
Number 1 Rule...Do not feel guilty. Simple right? Not at first. The guilt factor seems to be an unsolicited add-on that comes with being a mum. I'm fairly sure my husband doesn't have it, or least not on the same scale as me. He can tell me he's off to his beloved footy and that's that. The bottom line is that you're choosing to do something positive for yourself and your family. There is nothing to feel guilty about.
Until next time...

You will never find time for anything.
