My New Home

Here I am in my new home at Parent's Precinct. I'm moving up in the world of blogging it seems. To all the subscribers, I hope you continue on with me and enjoy reading about all the joys, fears and frustrations of parenting sprinkled liberally with some light-hearted musings and social commentary along the way.
Since I’ve been blogging, the process has been an incredible outlet and, in a twist of good fortune, has been instrumental in keeping my creative energy flowing…a most handy by-product for my job as a freelance writer. I find myself constantly coming up with new and hopefully exciting topics and finishing discussions with “I think I’ll write about that in my next blog”.
Lately I’ve been thinking about how much I want to go back to doing things 'old school'. By old school I mean ‘simply’. There’s a whole side of me yearning for the simplicity that women had generations ago. Then there’s the other side that is the classic Type A, over-achieving, controlling, doing it all mum. In an almost daily battle, I seem to flick between the two creating a virtual minefield for my ever-patient husband.
However prevailing in recent times is my old school calling and I feel that perhaps I’m not the only one. Have you noticed that retailers are experiencing record sales in sewing machines and slow cookers! The Gen Y woman is feeling that pull back to the ways of old and I for one am all for it. I’ve accepted this seemingly unquenchable thirst for learning and now seek out the time honoured answers to my quandaries like…how do I get that red wine stain out…what are the benefits of lavender oil in my household…how can I cook healthy meals on a budget…the list goes on and on and I’m there for the taking.
Making my quest for knowledge easier is an untapped resource…my mum. Perhaps silenced by a little thing called the women’s revolution, her innate desire to teach me the ways of her mother was replaced with a mission to arm me with confidence and attitude to make it in this ‘new world’. Of course I thank her for shaping me the way she did, as I wouldn’t be doing what I am now. However now that I’m all grown up with babies of my own, I'm calling it in mum! In addition to my pioneering mum, there’s a host of other resources I’m devouring…
I’m always looking for more so let me know if you have any ideas.
Yours in parenting.
PS Keep an eye out for an upcoming post. I plan on featuring a compelling, honest and passionate account from one of best friends on her diagnosis of Post-Natal Depression. Her story may be something you can relate to or relate to someone close to you and certainly not something you want to miss.

* The 4 Ingredients recipe book – full of easy and delicious family favourites using a very budget-friendly 4 ingredients or less.
* Shannon Lush – this lady is equipped with a wealth of knowledge and has a TV show called Lush House on the Lifestyle Channel (Australia) and has penned a number of books like Spotless and Speed Cleaning.

The old adage - everything old is new again is so true.
In recent years I've seen young women (my daughters included) yearning for the skills my great grandmother took for granted - knitting, sewing, baking (no not from a packet), all so called 'old school' traits.
If old school values follow - then perhaps (just perhaps) society will have a little more respect for each other as well.
Stay well
