Religion. . . What to tell a child?

September 6th 2007 14:46
I am wiccan. I am proud to say that as it is part of me and I don't think it's something to hide from.
I have had strong wiccan beliefs ever since I found my path and I never had to come out of the broom closet if I am honest.

But what do I teach my child?

Since birth, and maybe even before, she has been aware of mummy's candles and books. She has seen me light candles and I have read to her from many a witchy book. So I am not hiding my beliefs from her. But still, I believe that she should make her own choice when it comes to a religion.

So, I know that she needs to have access to all belief systems and to be allowed to see all of the worlds religions. Which means, to teach her, I need to learn too.

Like many people, I am familiar with the birth of christ, noahs ark, Moses, Adam and Eve and many of the other bible stories. But I won't even pretend I know much about many of the other major world religions.

So this is a call to people who read this. I would like you to email me the stories that your religion use to teach children.
Anything is welcome as long as it teaches about any religion.

Please write the story using very simple terminology so that it can be read to a small child and email it to parentsprecinct@hotmail.co.uk.

I will publish every submission to this blog, so check back for stories.

I am Roman Catholic and my husband is of no denomination. We haven't yet thought about what to tell our son about religion, he's four years old, but we have agreed that we will teach him what we can about as many religions we can. We are lucky in that we have some close friends that are of different religious backgrounds than us so when it comes to it we will as the saying goes "Pick their brains". In this day and age there is a lot available information around, the internet is a great source for this.

As for stories, as a child I always remembered the Jesus Turns water into Wine story.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for.

Take Care.
