Teething Troubles

August 12th 2008 23:33
Sleepless nights, constant crying and a pleading look that says, “Please help me mummy”. Yes, Samantha is cutting another tooth.

I check her mouth every couple of days. I can’t feel anything as yet but I am guessing that it is one of her molars, judging by the levels of crankiness.

Her eight front teeth were painful but sometimes just bonjela was enough, and only occasionally did we need panadol.
Now even after bonjela she is still sits there crying or just buries her head in the floor screaming. It breaks a mothers heart.

In the hope of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel I have been researching the order in which the teeth come through and how much longer this may go on for. Below is the order the teeth generally (but not always) come through:

Teeth Chart

1. The lower incisors
2. The upper incisors
3. The upper side teeth
4. The lower side teeth
5. The first upper molars (back teeth)
6. The first lower molars
7. The upper canines
8. The lower canines
9. The lower second molars
10. The upper second molars

Your baby should have all their teeth by two and a half years of age. Woo hoo! Only 16 months of this left.. All I can say is I am glad it is not everyday.

Teething - Symptoms and Relief

April 1st 2008 04:40
Samantha is teething now and it is causing a lot of stress for all of us. Teething can start from three months of age and last until the child is three years. I really hope it won’t last long though. Some days we have a full 24 hours of crankiness and crying which means no sleep for any of us.

Below are some of the symptoms of teething
Drooling
Sleep problems
Constant grizzling or crying
Putting their hands in their mouths
Trying to bite on hard objects
Refusing food
Nappy Rash – Some doctors say there is no scientific evidence between nappy rash and teething, but Samantha only ever has nappy rash when she is going through a difficult teething phase.
Babies may also have a mild fever or coughing, if this is the case keep an eye on them to ensure they are not showing any other flu like symptoms.

Tips for easing your baby’s pain include chilled teething rings and pressure of mum or dads fingers on the gums. They are worth are try but what has worked best for me is, cold apple puree (served straight from the fridge), bonjela (applied with clean fingers) , a wet flannel to chew on, and for days when nothing else will work I give her a small amount of panadol.
Then of course there those days when there is nothing you can do and they are so tired they can’t sleep, today is one of those days for me all you can do is put them in their pram and push them around the block.
