Why babies cry?

I remember the day after Samantha was born watching the nurse do her cares. Samantha was crying. I clearly looked worried because the nurse said to me “Don’t worry there is nothing wrong with your baby, they cry, that’s what babies do”
Babies cry for a number of reasons, most of the time it is not an indication of serious illness.
Reasons for crying change, as the child gets older. Some of the reasons babies cry are as follows:
They are hungry or thirsty – Let your baby decide when he or she has finished feeding. If you are breast-feeding and the baby stops suckling then burp your baby and offer the other breast. If bottle-feeding make up another bottle if your baby still wants more at the end of a feed. Babies are individuals they know how much they need and they don’t read the side of the formula tins to see how much they are supposed to be having.
Wind – Simple burp them
Uncomfortable – Check their nappy first if that’s clean then they maybe too hot or too cold. Many parents and yes I was one of them wrap their babies up so much they over heat. Newborns need one more layer than you do in the winter. The best way to check whether your baby is too warm or too cold is by touching the skin on their chest.
Over stimulation - Babies get over stimulated if there is too much noise, if you are in a busy restaurant and your baby won’t stop crying get the bill and go they will probably stop soon as you walk out the door (and the other diners will be greatful). Also, if they are awake for long periods with all your family and friends looking and interacting with them, expect them to be hard to settle later.
Sometimes they just want a cuddle, after being made to come out of the nice cosy womb, babies like the security of being held. When putting your baby down to sleep wrap them securely they will sleep much better.
For those of you that have not tried it yet the Dunstan baby language video can be quite useful, although there are two videos each only 10 minutes and you only need to watch it once, so maybe see if you can borrow a copy.
